Jelle Hoekstra
Jelle is a European and Dutch patent attorney. He wrote "References to the EPC" as part of his preparation for EQE 1998. He later on co-founded DeltaPatents. Nowadays he is a full-time tutor in many of the DeltaPatents' courses on the European Patent Convention (EPC), specializing in substantive patent law (patentability, novelty and inventive step).
He trains patent attorneys preparing for the EQE and gives courses to European patent attorneys as part of their continuing education. In addition, he has developed training courses for Formalities Officers (patent administrators, paralegals) and Information Specialists (searchers). BooksIn addition to "References to the EPC", Jelle is the (co-)author of many more books on the EPC, particularly aiming at preparing candidates for the EQE.

Career
Jelle graduated in Mathematics, specializing in Industrial Mathematics and Computer Science. In 1986, he started work at Philips Factory Automation (CFT) in Eindhoven, as a consultant specializing in computer networks for factories. In 1990, Jelle joined D2B Systems Co, Ltd. in Redhill, UK as the technical manager. He got involved in patents and licensing of IPR while working at D2B, a company which was heavily reliant on its intellectual property rights.
In 1995, Jelle joined the Philips Patent department (IP&S) as a patent attorney (trainee). He gained his Dutch patent attorney and European patent attorney qualifications. Within Philips, in addition to patent creation and prosecution, he also managed various IPR issues in these fields. This included counselling the business groups covering these areas, managing the portfolios in these areas (in terms of creation, prosecution, and maintenance) and acquiring and selecting invention disclosures. He was also involved in patent licensing and patent assertion. In 2001, Jelle and three of his colleagues founded DeltaPatents. |
